It turns out January was a big month for changes for me. In addition to trying (and loving) hot yoga, I started incorporating essential oils more consistently in my life.
I first started dabbling with oils last spring. I kept seeing them and hearing good things about them, but I didn’t know a lot about them so I bought some cheap ones on amazon. Occasionally I would diffuse some in my diffuser. And every now and then I would drop some lavender in bath. I later learned that it’s actually important to be aware of where your oils come from, and how they’re made. I learned that a lot of the cheaper oils aren’t as pure, which follows with the saying “you get what you pay for”.
I started learning more about Doterra essential oils. This company gets oils where they are most naturally grown. For example, they get their lavender oil from lavender grown in France, which is lavender’s most natural habitat. So yes, Doterra is definitely more expensive than other oil brands, but I know where my oils come from, and how they are tested. Doterra also puts forth a lot of education and gives the science behind oils.
On that note – when I switched to Doterra, I started making some of my own beauty products.
One is a face wash I got from my favorite nurse blogger named Kelsey (visit her blog here). She’s someone who I’ve learned a lot about oils from. It was her education about Doterra that really convinced me to make the switch.
DIY Face Wash
3/4 cup Organic Coconut Oil
1/2 cup baking soda
15 drops Frankincese
15 drops Melaleuca
15 drops Lavender
Mix all together. Us VERY small amount on damp skin.
I’ve been using this for about 3 weeks and my skin is so much better. The second week was a little rough. I usually have very oily skin and with the external oil my skin seemed to stop producing oil for a couple days and my face was absolutely raw. However, after a couple days my skin calmed down. My acne with my cycle was much better controlled. My skin is always so soft, and feels so clean after I wash it.
DIY Face Toner
So I made this earlier this week. I have large pores. Like, I look in the mirror and can just see my pores. I actually had a friend ask me why he could see all my pores. After asking around and doing some research of my own it turns out that a toner is what I needed.
Here’s what you need:
tea tree oil
glass spritzer bottle.
I had a 4oz spritzer bottle and added 10 drops each of lavender and tea tree oil and filled the bottle the rest of the way with witch hazel. Give it a little shake and spray it on your face after your washes.
DIY Body Butter
This stuff is my JAM. I’m a nurse and after a couple shifts in a row my hands are absolutely raw. The other morning when I got off work the water in my shower actually stung my hands when it hit them because they were so dry. I found this recipe on wellnessmama.com.
Ingredients + Supplies:
1/2 cup shea butter
1/2 cup cocoa butter
1/2 cup coconut oil
1/2 olive oil
optional: 10-30 drops essential oil of choice (I used 20 drops of lavender, but this really smells amazing without the essential oil thanks to the cocoa butter).
2 cup glass measuring cup, medium sized pot, water
1. In glass measuring cup mix all ingredients except essential oil
2. Place glass cup in pot of water and heat ingredients until it becomes all liquidy and mixes together
3. Remove from heat and let cooling process start, add essential oil at this time if you’re going to.
4. Place in fridge to finish cooling process, takes about 2 hrs (depending on how cold your fridge is)
5. When more solid, but still slightly soft pull mixture out and use hand mixer to whip until fluffy (about 10 mins).
6. Place back in fridge 10-15 mins to set.
7. Store in glass container (I keep mine in a mason jar).
8. Use as you would other lotions and enjoy!
I love putting this on my legs after I shave, it makes my legs so soft and smooth. Rub it into your hands before bed each night.
What I love about this body butter is all the ingredients are actually nourishing to your skin. There’s no alcohol or other ingredients that ultimately dry out your skin.
That’s all folks, these are 3 products that I use daily on my skin, and my skin has never been better. I love that I can list off the top of my head the ingredients in these products. I love how they smell, and how they make my skin feel. Cheers to taking care of yourself and being aware of what we’re putting in and on our bodies! Happy Saturday!
